Cooling Tower Chemistry

Hydrovida’s prime initiative is to produce sustainable practice wherever possible. In cooling tower applications this includes a strong program that minimizes energy consumption, saves water and uses formulated biodegradable and environmental chemistry. The primary goal is to make cooling towers a positive application for both humans and the environment. Hydrovida is devoted to developing the ideal sustainable treatment of cooling towers and hopes to create a world where water pollution is completely halted. Contact Hydrovida to be connected with your local representative to get more information on Hydrovida's cooling tower and HVAC treatment programs and specialized chemistry and help us be part of the solution!

Cooling towers are an integral part of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Cooling towers are used as a special type of heat exchanger that utilizes water’s evaporative cooling properties to cool return water from HVAC systems.

Due to the evaporative cooling effect utilized by cooling towers, scale formation overtime is inevitable without treatment, as insoluble salts eventually precipitate out onto heat transfer surfaces as they become supersaturated. Scale formation on heat transfer surfaces causes very large increases in energy consumption as energy efficiency is dramatically decreased. Additionally, cooling towers can be breeding grounds for bacteria and harmful microbes due to the available source of nutrients and warm water conditions. It is imperative to prevent microbial growth for both safety and energy conservation reasons. Harmful legionella bacteria can cause severe life threatening disease in some individuals. Bacteria and biofilm (bacterial buildup and waste) are also strong thermal insulators causing energy transfer surfaces to be rendered almost useless, which significantly increases energy use and decreases efficiency in HVAC systems.

Traditional cooling tower treatment typically use environmentally harmful chemicals to control scale and dirt deposits that accumulate in a cooling tower over time. Cooling towers use blowdown (flushing of circulated cooling water) to keep total dissolved solids at a reasonable level. This blowdown ousts these injected chemicals into water drains. This type of treatment makes cooling towers large sources of pollution and if treated wrong, sources of increased carbon due to higher energy use.
